Mayflower High School offers numerous opportunities for students to develop leadership and representation skills. We entrust pupils with responsibilities that align with their strengths and abilities. Formal pupil leadership provides significant benefits for both the pupils and the school.

Executive Committee

Year Groups Involved: Years 7–11

Aim of the Group: To promote a collaborative approach and foster cooperation across leadership groups.

How Members Are Recruited: Representation from all leadership groups.

Examples of Activities: Collaborate on projects, report termly to the Headteacher, and contribute to final decisions brought forward by the student body.

Digital Leaders

Year Groups Involved: Years 7–13

Aim of the Group: To educate and empower our community to make informed decisions online.

How Members Are Recruited: Applicants complete a form and are interviewed by current Digital Leaders.

Examples of Activities: Run drop-in sessions, deliver assemblies, monitor social media platforms for harassment, mentor key students, and run workshops (both online and in-person) with local primary schools.

Dyslexia Council

Year Groups Involved: Years 7–13

Aim of the Group: To foster a sense of community, support and guide students, provide a safe space to share concerns, and develop social skills through peer interaction.

Examples of Activities: Discuss successes and challenges, and explore the monthly topic.

Peer Mentoring – Year 10 and Year 7 Dyslexia Unit

Year Groups Involved: Year 10 and Year 7

Aim of the Group: For Year 10 students to share their experiences of managing dyslexia, empower themselves, and provide Year 7 students with effective support strategies.

Examples of Activities: Discuss key topics and engage in general conversations about shared interests.

Peer Mentoring – Year 12 and Year 10 Dyslexia Unit

Year Groups Involved: Year 10 and Year 12

Aim of the Group: For Year 12 students to share their experiences of managing dyslexia, particularly during GCSEs, and offer Year 10 students targeted support strategies.

Examples of Activities: Discuss managing GCSE workloads, revision strategies, and post-16 options, alongside general conversations about interests.

Prefects

Year Groups Involved: Years 10–11

Aim of the Group: To represent and uphold the core values of the school, organisation, and smooth operation of the school in an official capacity.

How Members Are Recruited: Open applications available to all students.

Examples of Activities: Perform duties, drive initiatives to support students, and promote core values throughout the school.

Senior Prefects

Year Groups Involved: Years 10–11

Aim of the Group: To lead teams of prefects and develop key strategies for school improvement.

How Members Are Recruited: Open applications available to all students.

Examples of Activities: Oversee teams of prefects to ensure efficiency, support events such as Open Evenings, and promote the school’s core values.

Peer Support Team

Year Groups Involved: Year 10

Aim of the Group: To support KS3 students on a 1:1 mentor basis or through targeted form group sessions.

How Members Are Recruited: Through applications and demonstrated interest.

Examples of Activities: Provide individual mentoring for issues such as friendship challenges, low self-esteem, and academic concerns; lead group activities to develop emotional awareness; and deliver assemblies.

Eco Club

Year Groups Involved: Years 7–13

Aim of the Group: To promote awareness and understanding of environmental issues.

How Members Are Recruited: Open to all students.

Examples of Activities: Conduct litter picks, deliver assemblies, work on projects to improve the school environment (e.g., developing the memorial garden), and participate in enrichment trips around the country.

Student Council Representatives

Year Groups Involved: Two representatives from each tutor group in Years 7–11.

Aim of the Group: To facilitate communication between tutor groups and Year Managers, and to drive change while promoting the school’s core values.

How Members Are Recruited: Nominated by tutor groups.

Examples of Activities: Attend half-termly meetings with Year Managers to discuss school life and suggest improvements.

Mental Health and Wellbeing Team

Year Groups Involved: Year 13, with members assigned responsibility for different year groups.

Aim of the Group: To raise collective awareness of mental health and wellbeing.

How Members Are Recruited: Through application and interview.

Examples of Activities: Design posters, organise charity events, speak to form groups and assemblies, and contribute to the school newsletter.

Student Librarians

Year Groups Involved: All years groups from 7-13

Aim of the Group: To maintain and support running of the library

Examples of Activities: Training on the library system to sign books in and out for students, run projects, maintain and update displays, support librarian in duties
