What is a Young Carer?
At Mayflower we are aware that some of our students are young carers and supporting them in their role is very important. A young carer is a person under the age of 18 who looks after someone in their family, or a friend, who is ill, disabled, or has a mental health condition or addiction.
The tasks and level of care undertaken by young carers can vary depending on the nature of the illness or disability, the level and frequency of need, and the structure of the family as a whole.
We know that young carers may need a little extra support and we are committed to ensuring that all students who are young carers are identified, and supported effectively.
We offer regular drop in sessions and work closely with SCAFT (Supporting Carers and Families Together), who provide support in school through one-to-one sessions and external group provision.
Our designated lead for young carers is Mrs Cooke and the following members of staff also support our young carers Mrs Craske, Mrs Lees, and Mrs Weightman with the help from our 6th form leadership team.
If you are a young carer and would like some support, please see Mrs Cooke in the safeguarding office at any time or come along to the drop in times above.
Young people can self-refer using the link below and/or speak to any member of the pastoral team. Further information about drop in times and the support that is also available is on your pastoral pages.
